A Love Letter
to Leather Craft

Riva Valencia was born from a deep and abiding love of Spanish leather craft. Founded in 1999, we set out to create something the world was missing: leather goods of genuine artisan quality, made without compromise, offered without the inflated price of a heritage logo.

The idea started small — a single workbench in a rented corner of a tannery district in Valencia, a handful of tools inherited from a grandfather who had spent his own life cutting leather, and a conviction that the old way of making things had not actually gone out of style. It had simply gone out of fashion with an industry more interested in logos than in leather. We wanted to build something that answered to neither trend cycles nor marketing departments — only to the hide in front of us and the hands working it.

Every piece we make is cut, stitched and finished by our artisans in Valencia, a city that has been the heart of Spanish leather craftsmanship for over five centuries. We source only full-grain leather of the highest grade, vegetable-tanned using traditional methods passed down through generations. Nothing in our atelier is rushed, nothing is outsourced, and nothing leaves our hands until it has earned the Riva Valencia name.

What began as one workbench is now a small atelier of specialists — cutters, stitchers, edge-finishers — each one a custodian of a single stage in a process that has barely changed in five hundred years, because it has never needed to.

The Founding Story

Five Centuries in the Making

Valencia has been shaping leather since before the word “luxury” meant anything at all. For five hundred years, hides have passed through this city’s tanneries, been cut on the same kinds of workbenches, and finished by hands trained by hands that came before them. Riva Valencia did not invent this craft. We simply refused to let it disappear into an industry that had started to value the logo stitched onto a bag more than the leather it was stitched into.

In our first year, we made twelve bags. Each one took longer than we had budgeted for, cost more to produce than we could reasonably charge, and taught us something we still rely on today. We learned that a hide tells you what it wants to become if you are patient enough to listen — that rushing a cut or forcing a stitch never saves time, it only moves the problem further down the line, usually to the person who eventually owns the piece.

What kept us going in those early years was not a business plan. It was the conviction that there was still a place in the world for things made properly — slowly, by named individuals, from materials chosen for how they would age rather than how they would photograph. Every Riva Valencia piece is still, in that sense, one of those first twelve bags: made by someone whose name we know, in a workshop we could walk you through today, from a hide we chose ourselves.

That is the story we keep telling with every piece we make, and it is the same one you will find, told a little differently each time, throughout our Journal below — notes from the atelier, the people behind the leather, and the process itself, for anyone who wants to go deeper than a product page ever could.

Our Philosophy

No Logos.
Only Leather.

We believe the greatest luxury is quality you can feel: a hide so supple it conforms to your hand from day one, stitching so tight it will outlast a decade of daily use, hardware so solid it never rattles or tarnishes.

A logo is a promise made by someone else, on someone else’s behalf. We would rather earn that trust piece by piece — in the weight of a bag in your hand, in the way a wallet softens exactly where your fingers rest, in the small, private satisfaction of owning something that was actually made, not merely branded.

That is also why we do not chase seasons. A Riva Valencia piece bought today is meant to still look right a decade from now — not because it ignores design, but because it was never built around a trend that would eventually pass.

We are craftspeople offering you something far more valuable than a logo: leather goods that become more beautiful with every scratch and every year of honest use. This is what we mean by luxury.

What Guides Us

Our Core Values

The principles we build every single piece around

01

Uncompromising Materials

We use only full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather from Valencia's finest tanneries. We never use bonded leather, PU coatings, or split hides. If it is not the best, it does not enter our atelier.

02

Artisan Hands Only

Every cut, every stitch, every edge is done by human hands. We use saddle-stitch technique, each thread passed individually, so a broken thread never unravels an entire seam.

03

Designed to Last Decades

Our designs are intentionally timeless. Every piece is engineered to be used, repaired, and passed on. The anti-trend is the only trend we follow.

From Hide to Hand

How We Make It

Every Riva Valencia piece takes 4 to 6 weeks to complete

01

Selection

We hand-select each hide for grain consistency and natural character. Only the top 20% of hides we receive are accepted into our atelier.

02

Cutting

Each piece is hand-cut using steel-rule dies and wooden mallets, the same method used in Valencia for five centuries. No lasers.

03

Stitching

Traditional two-needle saddle stitch with waxed linen thread. Each piece takes 4 to 8 hours of stitching alone by our master artisans.

04

Finishing

Edges burnished by hand, hardware fitted, conditioned with natural beeswax. A final inspection before it is wrapped for you.
